# Recovery and new phone

InfraIO Pay never holds your keys or your recovery phrase. Recovery depends
on what **you** kept: a synced passkey, a recovery phrase, or both.

## When you need the recovery phrase

| Wallet type | Recovery phrase |
| --- | --- |
| Passkey wallet | **Optional.** Recommended as a backup. |
| Device key wallet (phones that cannot use passkeys) | **Required.** |
| Any wallet, before you remove your last passkey | **Required.** |

## 1. Restore with a synced passkey

If your passkey syncs through your device account or password manager:

1. Install the app on the new phone.
2. Sign in to the same device account or password manager.
3. Choose to restore an existing wallet and approve the passkey prompt.

Your wallet and its address come back as they were. Your balances are on the
blockchain, so they do not move.

## 2. Restore with the recovery phrase

If you cannot use the passkey:

1. Install the app on the new phone.
2. Choose to restore an existing wallet and enter your recovery phrase.
3. Set up a new passkey on the new phone when the app asks.

Enter the words in the right order, exactly as you wrote them.

## 3. Keep the phrase safe

- Write it on paper and store it offline.
- Never type it into a website, a chat, or a screenshot.
- Never share it. Nobody from InfraIO Pay will ask for it.

> **Warning:**
>
> If you lose both the passkey and the recovery phrase, nobody can recover the
> wallet, including InfraIO Pay.
